Planetary Context - rethink /Felisa Wolfe-Simon
Dr. Felisa Wolfe-Simon - NASA Evolutionary Geobiochemistry.
Felisa Wolfe-Simon is a biochemist at the US Geological Survey and a fellow of the NASA Astrobiology Institute. Her research focuses on evolutionary microbiology and exotic metabolic pathways. Her work includes the discovery of the bacterium GFAJ-1 from Mono Lake, California that is able to incorporate arsenate (AsO3−4) as a substitute for phosphate (PO3−4) in its DNA and other essential biomolecules. This is the first form of life known to be capable of growth in environments with little or no phosphorus.
